Why did Eve eat the forbidden fruit?
Eve ate the forbidden fruit because she was not satisfied, Satan suggested something better, and the fruit was good for food, pleasant to the eye, and desired to make one wise. Her appetite and pride—wanting to be as wise as God—led her to take and eat.
Les explains that Eve had everything in paradise—no sickness, death, disease, insects, or thorns—yet she was not satisfied. Satan detected that and came saying there was something better. Verse 6 says she saw the tree was good for food, pleasant to the eye, and desired to make one wise. Les notes it was not an apple, but likely some form of grape-type fruit, beautiful and appealing to the eye. The pride aspect was powerful: she had everything else, but if she could be as wise as God, that appealed to her pride. She took the fruit and ate. Les suggests she must have been a little hungry; she would not have eaten if stuffed after a Thanksgiving meal. The natural appetite was in high gear, the eye saw beautiful food, and Satan added that she would be wise as God. These are the three areas mankind still faces: the lust of the eye, the pride of life, and the lust of the flesh. Les clarifies the lust of the flesh does not always mean bad, since many desires in proper amount are good for us.
