Why were the things about Israel written in Scripture?

The things about Israel were written as examples and object lessons for our learning, so that later generations might learn from their failures and not lust after evil things or become idolaters as they did in the wilderness. These accounts serve as warnings for us.

Les explains from I Corinthians 10 that the Israelites who came out of Egypt all passed through the Passover and Red Sea experiences and gathered around Mount Sinai, yet God was not well pleased with many of them, and they were overthrown in the wilderness. Les connects this to Romans chapter 15, verse 6, where it says all these things were written aforetime for our learning. He teaches that the things concerning Israel were our examples, like flannel graph object lessons that told a distinct truth. They are recorded so we should learn not to lust after evil things as they lusted, nor be idolaters as some of them were, who sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play. Exodus chapter 32 is just as applicable for us.

Romans 15:6

That ye may with one mind and one mouth glorify God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ.
