Les Feldick Bible Study

Was Aaron a craftsman or skilled worker?

Aaron was a craftsman or skilled worker, as the context indicates. He received the golden earrings, melted the gold, and fashioned it with a graving tool into a molten calf. The transcript states he must have been a craftsman of some sort, confirming his skill.

Les explains that Aaron told the people to break off their golden earrings and bring them to him. They did so, and Aaron received the gold, fashioned it, and worked it. Les concludes that Aaron must have been a craftsman of some sort. He took the gold, melted it, and fashioned it with a graving tool, making the molten calf. Les also notes that the calf was an Egyptian god as well, the calf or ox, out of one of many. This demonstrates Aaron's role as a skilled worker in creating the idol.

Exodus 32:4

And he received them at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, after he had made it a molten calf: and they said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.
