Why does Paul reference the Exodus from Egypt in 1 Corinthians?

Paul references the Exodus from Egypt as a lesson for the Corinthians and for believers today. In 1 Corinthians 5 he calls Christ our Passover sacrificed for us, and in chapter 10 he ties Israel's spiritual food, drink, and rock to Christ, showing the Exodus points to Him.

Les explains that Paul purposely ties 1 Corinthians 5 and 10 together. In 1 Corinthians 5:7 Paul writes that believers should purge out the old leaven and be a new lump, as they are unleavened, for even Christ our Passover is sacrificed for us. Then Paul pulls the whole Exodus out of Egypt as a lesson for not only the Corinthians but for us. In chapter 10, they all ate the same spiritual food and drank the same spiritual drink, for they drank of that spiritual rock that followed them, and that rock was Christ.
