Les Feldick Bible Study

What should be our standard for understanding marriage—God's view, society, or our denomination?

God’s view is the standard for understanding marriage. We must go by how God looks at marriage, not by what society thinks or what a denomination thinks. The decisive question is what God says. Problems in attitudes toward marriage, especially among young people, stem from not being taught what God says about the marriage relationship.

Les teaches that society as a whole, and especially the Christian community, must understand how God looks at these things, because that is what we have to go by. He contrasts God's view with society's opinion and denominational opinion, asking, “How does God look at it? Not what society thinks, not what our denomination thinks, but what does God say?” He also says the problem with attitudes toward marriage among young people is that they have not been taught what God says about the marriage relationship. Even where remarriage and such bring guilt of adultery, Les assures that every sin is forgivable, since there is nothing the Lord will not forgive. He then points to the married: the wife should not depart from her husband, and if she departs she should remain unmarried or be reconciled; the husband likewise should not put away his wife. If an unbelieving spouse is pleased to dwell with the believing spouse, the believer should not leave or put away that spouse, but stay with him.
