What does Genesis 2:24 say about a man and his wife becoming one flesh?

Genesis 2:24 states that a man shall leave his father and mother, cleave to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh. This establishes marriage as a one-flesh union, and Paul later cites it to show that sexual joining to a harlot makes one body with her.

Les teaches that Genesis 2:24 follows the account of God taking a rib from Adam, making the woman, and bringing her to the man. Adam said she was bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh, and she was called woman because she was taken out of man. Verse 24 then says a man shall leave his father and mother, cleave or hang on to his wife, and they shall be one flesh. Les explains this is what Paul rests on when he says that he who is joined to a harlot is one body, for "two shall be one flesh."

Genesis 2:24

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
