Les Feldick Bible Study

why is the woman called woman in Genesis 2:23?

She is called woman because she was taken out of man. Adam declared her bone of his bones and flesh of his flesh. In Hebrew, man is ish, and woman is ishah, the word for man with an A added, marking her origin from man.

Les teaches that Paul is drawing on Genesis 2 when he says two shall be one flesh. In Genesis 2:21-23, God caused a deep sleep to fall on Adam, took one of his ribs, made the woman, and brought her to the man. Adam then said, "This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called woman, because she was taken out of man." In the Hebrew, man is ish, and woman is ishah, with an A added on the last. Verse 24 follows: therefore a man leaves his father and mother, cleaves to his wife, and they become one flesh.

Genesis 2:23
