Why does Paul say there is no wise man among the Corinthians?

Paul says it to shame the Corinthians: although they were all believers and had been designated God’s wisdom, they were failing to settle matters pertaining to this life, so he asks whether there is not even one wise man among them.

Les explains that Paul is dealing with judgments about things pertaining to this life and says to set such matters before those least esteemed in the church, which flies in the face of normally depending on the most eminent leaders. Then Paul says, “I speak to your shame. Is it so that there is not a wise man among you?” Les notes they did not have a huge church, but they had a good cross-section of Corinthian society who had become believers. Paul says there is not a wise man among them even though they were all believers and had been designated the wisdom of God.

1 Corinthians 6:5
