What kind of wisdom did Paul refuse to bring to Corinth?
Paul refused to bring the wisdom of this world to Corinth. He did not rely on human oratory, smooth talk, or impressive promotional methods, but came preaching the cross. He explicitly says he did not come with the wisdom of this world or with the princes of this world, which come to nothing.
Les explains that Paul did not arrive with oratory, smooth talk, or a big advanced team preparing him for large crusades. Instead, Paul came into the synagogue and likely into the busy marketplace, simply preaching the cross. In 1 Corinthians 2, Paul says he did not bring the wisdom of this world, nor the wisdom of the princes of this world, because such wisdom comes to nothing. Les contrasts this with pastors relying on gimmicks and programs, insisting God ordained the preaching of the Word. He also notes that the word “perfect” in the King James means mature, and the Corinthian believers had enough basic fundamentals of Paul’s gospel to be called mature, even though they were carnal. Paul did not come to Corinth with the wisdom of this world.
Howbeit we speak wisdom among them that are perfect: yet not the wisdom of this world, nor of the princes of this world, that come to nought:
