What is a sin unto death?

A sin unto death is gross enough that God takes that believer out ahead of time—physical death—as discipline, not loss of salvation. The spirit is saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. An example is the man in 1 Corinthians 5 living with his stepmother, delivered to Satan for the destruction of the flesh.

Les teaches that all unrighteousness is sin, whether it be a little sin or a great one, and there is a sin not unto death. The implication is that some sin is gross enough that God will take that believer out ahead of time. He points to 1 Corinthians 5, where a man is evidently committing a sin unto death—worthy of death if he does not repent and turn around. If he continues living with his stepmother in a marital relationship, God is going to take him out of Corinth. Verse 5 says to deliver such a one unto Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit, that is the soul of the man, may be saved in the day of the Lord Jesus. Les also notes the congregation was glorying and puffed up, and that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. He applies this to the church today, which has accommodated social sins rather than causing a ruckus.

1 John 5:16

If any man see his brother sin a sin which is not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it.
