What actually brought the Corinthians out of paganism?
The power of God, not Paul's fast talking or philosophical language, brought the Corinthians out of paganism. When Paul preached the simple gospel of Christ, the Holy Spirit enabled them to understand that they were sinners for whom Christ died and rose again.
Les explains that Corinth was near Athens, so Athens' philosophy and paganism were also present in Corinth. The Corinthians were used to hearing philosophers with smooth talk and big words, which still impresses people. Paul refused to come with smooth talk or the philosophers' long words; he came with power. Les stresses that the wisdom and power of God, not Paul's fast talking or language, brought these people out of paganism. As Paul preached the simple gospel of Christ, the Holy Spirit helped them understand that they were sinners for whom Christ died and rose from the dead. The kingdom of God is not in word but in power.
