What is God's attitude toward people according to Les?
God's attitude toward people is one of total love, mercy, and grace, not anger or a readiness to punish. The Lazarus account shows the emphasis was how much Jesus loved Mary and Martha, not how much they loved Him. Salvation rests on how much He loved us, saved us, and kept us.
Les explains that many people misunderstand the grace of God, imagining that God is just waiting for some frail human being to goof up so He can zap them. Les says that is not God's attitude. God's attitude is one of total love, mercy, and grace. Les points to John chapter 11 and the account of Lazarus, where the emphasis all through the chapter is not how much Mary and Martha loved Jesus, but how much He loved them. When Jesus wept, the Jews said, look how He loved them, not how much they loved Him. Les says this is something we must constantly remember: it is not how much we love Him, but how much He loved us, saved us, and kept us. Paul therefore says he does not frustrate the grace of God. Even the carnal, fleshly Corinthians with many problems received Paul's writing.
I do not frustrate the grace of God: for if righteousness come by the law, then Christ is dead in vain.
