What do skeptics believe about how the Old Testament was written?

Skeptics and scoffers claim the Old Testament came from ancient Israelite campfire stories, repeated orally over generations until someone finally decided to write them down. They deny that holy men of God spoke as moved by the Holy Spirit, treating Scripture instead as human tradition and invention.

Les explains that skeptics and scoffers attribute the Old Testament to stories that arose around ancient Israelite campfires, were verbally compared and passed down for generations, and were finally written down. He calls this ridiculous. Peter says nothing in the Old Testament came by men dreaming it up or by researching what various tribes thought. Instead, the Holy Spirit caused Moses, David, Elijah, and Jeremiah to write; New Testament writers were likewise holy men moved or inspired by the Holy Spirit. If the Holy Spirit is the author, there is no confusion. The scoffer claims contradictions, but everything fits when Scripture is compared with Scripture, as he then does beginning in Genesis 3.
