Les Feldick Bible Study

What does it mean that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation?

It means no Scripture verse is meant to stand alone as one person's private possession. God's Word is not wrapped up in a single verse; its meaning is understood by comparing Scripture with Scripture, building doctrine from Genesis to Revelation rather than resting eternal destiny on an isolated passage.

Les explains that when Peter says no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, “private” means that which pertains to one person, that which is yours. Nothing God sent forth to the human race is wrapped up in just one verse. Les notes that people get hung up because they want God to make it plainer, but God is dealing with adults, not third graders. We are to search the Scriptures by comparing Scripture with Scripture from Genesis to Revelation, which puts us on solid rock. Peter is making it plain: don't build your eternal destiny on one verse, but on a series of doctrines and teachings that fit from cover to cover. Verse 21 adds that the prophecy, or speaking forth of God's Word, did not come by the will of man.

2 Peter 1:20

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.
