Who is the primary example of a person who did not please himself?

Christ is the primary example of a person who did not please Himself. Scripture says that even Christ pleased not Himself, but bore reproaches for others. He chose the cross out of love for mankind, settling the sin problem and purchasing salvation rather than rejecting that path.

Les teaches that mature believers should bear the infirmities of the weak and not simply please themselves, but instead please their neighbor for his good and edification. He then presents Christ as the primary example, citing that even Christ pleased not Himself, and that the reproaches of those who reproached God fell on Him. Les explains that Christ died because He loved mankind. He had to die to settle the sin problem, but He could have rejected it. He could have said no, but He did not; He chose for mankind's sake, out of motivating love, to go to the cross and purchase our salvation.

Romans 15:3

For even Christ pleased not himself; but, as it is written, The reproaches of them that reproached thee fell on me.
