Does being holy mean you become an oddball or a kook?

No. Holiness does not mean becoming an oddball or a kook. It simply means being set apart, just as Temple vessels were declared holy. A believer's holy living sacrifice begins with lips of praise and thanksgiving to God, then moves into other areas of life; Christianity is never that kind of strange separation.

Les teaches that the word “holy” scares people, and he says it used to scare him too. He did not want to be thought of as holy, because then you are sort of out of everything, some sort of a kook, some kind of an oddball. But he insists Christianity is never that. Holiness simply means set apart, that is all. He points to the Temple vessels that were declared holy as an illustration. This connects to Romans 12 and the living sacrifice: do not let it stop with the lips of praise, because it will always move on into other areas of your life. The living sacrifice is holy, and offering praise and thanksgiving to God is first and foremost.

Romans 12:1

I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
