Why did God put blindness on the nation of Israel?

God placed national blindness on Israel because they became envious of Gentile salvation and opposed Paul's ministry everywhere he went. This judgment was national, not personal; it did not remove any individual Jew's opportunity to be saved during the calling out of the Body of Christ.

Les explains that during the present age, God is taking out of the Gentiles a people for His name—the church, which is His body. As that calling began, the Jews got envious and began to oppose it everywhere Paul went, so God put a blindness upon the nation. Les reminds people that God deals with the Jew on two levels, national and personal. When He blinds them nationally, that does not take away the personal opportunity for salvation.
