What does Zechariah say will happen when Israel finally looks on the Messiah they pierced?

Zechariah says Israel will suddenly look on the one they pierced and mourn for him as one mourns for an only child. This mourning comes because the nation will suddenly understand who Jesus really is, experiencing a salvation like Paul’s on the road to Damascus.

Les explains that Zechariah’s prophecy is tied to Israel’s future national awakening. Just as Paul was stopped on the road to Damascus and suddenly saw who Jesus really is, the whole nation of Israel will one day experience the same kind of salvation. At that moment they will look on the one they pierced and mourn for him as for an only child. Isaiah also says the nation will be born in a day, Isaiah 66. Israel is currently set aside and blind while God is dealing with the Gentiles, but Israel remains in God’s program and will yet experience her greatest glory.

Zechariah 12:10

And I will pour upon the house of David, and upon the inhabitants of Jerusalem, the spirit of grace and of supplications: and they shall look upon me whom they have pierced, and they shall mourn for him, as one mourneth for his only son, and shall be in bitterness for him, as one that is in bitterness for his firstborn.
