How does God reckon faith according to the pattern of Scripture?
According to Scripture's pattern, faith is reckoned when God speaks and a person responds to what He has said. Noah built the ark by faith after God commanded him; Abraham left Ur when God told him. God sees that response as faith and reckons it as faith, and He now applies this same pattern to the Gospel.
Les explains that this is the consistent pattern all the way through Scripture: when God speaks and men respond to it, then God sees it as faith and reckons that faith. He points to Noah, who did not jump the gun but did not start until God said, "build an ark." Hebrews 11 says that by faith Noah responded to what God told him to do, and he built an ark. Abraham, by faith, left Ur of the Chaldees when God said to. Les says this same pattern now applies to the Gospel. It has been revealed to us; the Apostle Paul brought it out to the Gentile world, and now God lays responsibility upon Gentiles to believe the Gospel Paul calls "My Gospel," the Gospel of the Grace of God, the Gospel he preaches among the Gentiles, and the Gospel of the preaching of Jesus Christ according to the revelation of the secret kept secret from ages past. Today we are to believe what God has revealed. Paul then returns to Israel's situation, asking whether they have not heard and did not know; their sound went into all the earth, and their words unto the ends of the world, but Israel did not know.
