Who is the stone of all Scripture?
The stone of all Scripture is Christ—Jesus of Nazareth—the stumbling stone and rock of offense laid in Zion. He is the stone over whom Israel and the world stumble when they seek righteousness by works of the law rather than by faith, yet whoever believes on Him shall not be ashamed.
Les teaches that the stone of all Scripture is Christ in all the various aspects of a stone, but in this context He is a stone of stumbling. He is Jesus of Nazareth, the stone of stumbling for Israel, and He remains the stone of stumbling for the world today. People stumble over the precious truths concerning Christ and His finished work of the cross. Paul contrasts this with the works religion that marks so much of Christendom, including Protestantism, Catholicism, and the cults: they sought it not by faith, but as it were by the works of the law. Verse 33 says, “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, and whosoever believeth on him shall not be ashamed.”
