Do Christians have a status as children of God that Israel never had?

Yes. Members of the Body of Christ are children of God, a term Israel has never enjoyed and never will. This position, being born ones of God and joined heirs with Christ, is something even Israel will never attain to.

Les explains that believers in the Body of Christ enjoy a position that even Israel will never attain to. He notes that 'children of God' is a term Israel has never enjoyed and never will. As members of the Body of Christ, believers are the very born ones of God by virtue of their salvation experience. The Church will be the Bride of Christ and joined heirs with Christ, destined to rule and reign with Him. Everything that is His will be ours, and everything that is ours is His. Les connects this to Romans 9:25-26, where Gentiles who were not God's people are called 'children of the living God.' After this calling out of Gentiles, God will turn back to His covenant people Israel, as seen in Romans 11.
