Les Feldick Bible Study

Why did the serpent bruise the Redeemer's heel?

The serpent bruised the Redeemer’s heel by causing the suffering of the cross. At the cross Christ defeated Satan, but the serpent would cause the suffering Christ endured through the ordeal of the cross, and that is the bruising of the Redeemer’s heel.

Les explains that Genesis 3:15 contains the first promise concerning Christ in the flesh. The seed of the woman is Christ, as Galatians explains. Christ would bruise the serpent’s head—defeating Satan at the cross. Yet the verse also says the serpent would bruise the seed’s heel. Les teaches that this refers to the suffering Christ went through in the ordeal of the cross. So at the cross the seed of the woman defeats the serpent, while the serpent causes the suffering of the cross and consequently bruises the heel of the Redeemer.

Genesis 3:15

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed; it shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise his heel.
