What did God write on the tables of stone during Moses' 40 days on the mountain?

While Moses was on Mount Sinai for forty days and forty nights, God wrote the Ten Commandments on the tables of stone. Those Ten Commandments are basically what is referred to as the law, the moral law given to Israel at Sinai.

Les explains the setting: Israel came out of Egypt under Moses, and Moses led them to Mount Sinai. As the people camped around the mountain, God called Moses up into the mountain, which was on fire and smoke. While Moses was up there for forty days and forty nights, God wrote on the tables of stone the Ten Commandments. Les says this is basically what we refer to as the law, the moral law—those Ten Commandments.
