Why does Jeremiah 30:5 describe men in travail with faces turned pale?

Jeremiah 30:5 depicts men gripped by trembling, fear, and pain because of the horrible events coming upon the earth, centered especially in the Middle East. During the tribulation, this tremendous suffering and fear will be directed primarily to the children of Israel.

Les explains that Jeremiah 30:5 is set in the context of the tribulation, which is primarily God dealing with the nation of Israel. He quotes the verse: a voice of trembling, fear, and not peace; men have hands on their loins like a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness. Les teaches the reason is the horrible events coming on the earth, primarily centered in the Middle East. He notes that several Middle Eastern nations have nuclear warheads, that some feel Israel alone has 200, and that Persia, Iran, and Syria probably have some. This creates potential for mass destruction hanging over the Middle East, besides what Russia and America are doing. The result is tremendous fear and suffering beyond imagination, directed primarily to the children of Israel.

Jeremiah 30:5

For thus saith the LORD; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace.
