Why does Romans 8 say God is for us and no one can be against us?

Romans 8 presents God being for us as the consequence of Christ dying for us. Because Christ died for us, God is for us, and no one can be against us. The chapter’s closing verses add that neither principalities nor powers can keep us from the love of God.

Les explains that Romans 8 gives “those great verses of assurance”: Christ died for us, consequently God is for us, no one can be against us, and the closing verses declare that neither principalities nor powers can keep us from the love of God. He then treats Romans 12:1 as the other side of a parenthesis: “I beseech you therefore,” where the “therefore” looks back to what was just finished in chapter 8.

What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us?
