What were believers predestinated to, if not heaven or hell?

Scripture teaches that believers were predestinated unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, immediately placed as heirs with the Father and Son and as joint heirs with Christ from day one—not predestinated to heaven or hell, but to that position with Christ.

Les explains Ephesians 1:5 as saying believers were predestinated unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will. He defined adoption as practiced in Roman and Greek culture: a child was put under tutors, educated and trained, and prepared to come in at an equal level with the father, then went through the rites of adoption. The Hebrew culture had something akin in Bar Mitzvah at age 14, but it was not the same category because they were in the secular world and preparing the child to be a co-worker in the business. Paul teaches that the moment we become a believer, we do not go through years of tutoring and training; we are immediately placed as an heir with the Father and the Son. Thus, Les says, we were predestinated not to heaven and not to hell, but as a believer to that position with Christ from day one, as a joint heir in the process of the adoption. He also ties this to Ephesians 1:11, where we have obtained an inheritance and are joint heirs with Christ; if you are a joint heir, the other parties are yours, and in the secular economy, if the other half passes off the scene, the heir ends up with it.
