What does it mean to become a believer according to Romans 10?

Romans 10 describes it as recognizing that Christ died for our sin, admitting we are hopeless in ourselves, and calling upon the name of the Lord. Confession with the mouth is made unto salvation, but one need not tell someone first to be saved. Whoever calls upon the Lord shall be saved.

Les explains that Romans 10 culminates in verse 13: "whosoever shall call upon the name of the LORD shall be saved." That is a promise. Becoming a believer involves recognizing that Christ died for our sin, recognizing we are hopeless in ourselves, and calling upon Him. Confession with the mouth is made unto salvation, but you do not have to tell somebody before you can be saved. Instead, having experienced something good in salvation, we should be ready to talk about it at the drop of a hat, as easily as we talk about the weather, speaking of the spiritual things God has done on our behalf. None of us are deserving of God's heaven, but we know we are going there because of God's promises. Les illustrates that just as a lifeguard hears the kid in trouble despite all the racket at a swimming pool, God is the same way.

Romans 10:13
