Why is it surprising that humanity is as civilized as it is?
Humanity's civilization is surprising because the carnal or old Adamic mind is enmity against God and is not subject to the law of God. The unsaved person is rebellious, an enemy of God, and God does not expect unbelievers to keep His law or be good, since their nature is anything but.
Les explains that the carnal or old Adamic mind is enmity against God and is not subject to the law of God. He finds this shocking and scary because the unsaved person is not subject to God's law. God does not expect the unbeliever to keep His law or be a good person, because God sees down in his nature that he is anything but. Les says it is amazing that man is as civilized as he is, given that rebellion makes one an enemy of God.
Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be.
