What did Jesus mean by the broad way and the narrow way?

Jesus meant that the broad way is the wide, well-lit, well-traveled path taken by the majority, ending in eternal doom for those who reject the gospel. The narrow way leads to eternal life, has nothing appealing to the masses, and few find it.

Les explains that Jesus used the broad way and narrow way analogy to show that the broad way is wide, well lit, and well traveled, and many go that way. The way to eternal life is narrow; it has nothing that really appeals to the masses, and few there be that find it. Les says it has always been that way, with God satisfied with just a small remnant. He illustrates this with Elijah on Mount Carmel: after the prophets of Baal were put to death, Jezebel threatened Elijah, and he ran and despaired under a juniper tree, saying he was the only one left. God told him there were 7,000. Les teaches that through human history and even the church age, it remains just a small percentage, a small remnant.

Matthew 7:13
