Where is Christ seated, and where should we set our affection?

Christ is seated at the right hand of God, above. Because believers have been raised with Him, their affections should be set on things above, not on earthly things. This means seeking eternal priorities first, letting heaven be their primary interest rather than temporal, perishing things.

Les explains from Colossians chapter 3 that being risen with Christ—having died, been buried, and risen with Him—should produce a result: changed appetites and desires. He says believers are then to seek those things which are above, which are eternal, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God. Les connects this to Jesus' words to seek first the kingdom, stressing that priorities must be straight. He clarifies this does not require entering a monastery; God gives blessings to enjoy, but heaven is to have first interest. The command is to set affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Les notes society is consumed with things, and things perish. He illustrates with wanting a certain car, finally getting it, and finding realization flat; but with eternal things, the realization will be greater than anticipation.

Colossians 3:1

If ye then be risen with Christ, seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God.

Colossians 3:2

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.

More Questions

Why should I set my affection on things above and not on earthly things?

Believers are told to set their affection on things above rather than earthly things, and earthly things are perishable and are what our society wrongly focuses on.

Where did Jesus say something like "set your affection on things above"?

Colossians' instruction to set your affection on things above matches what Jesus said in the Gospels about seeking first the Kingdom of Heaven and then all these things being added.
