Les Feldick Bible Study

Why does God discipline Israel in this passage?

Israel is disciplined because the nation commits iniquity and falls short, and God treats it as a father treats a son. He uses other nations, the rod of men, and the stripes of the children of men. Yet His mercy will not depart from them, even after repeated chastening.

Les teaches that II Samuel 7 records God speaking to David through the prophet, and the covenant promise is that God will set up David's seed and establish his kingdom. Verse 14 says God will be his father and he shall be my son, but if he commits iniquity, God will discipline. Les explains that Hebrews makes plain a good earthly father disciplines his children, and God will do the same with His Son, the nation of Israel. The discipline comes through other nations, the rod of men, and the stripes of the children of men. Yet verse 15 begins with "But": no matter how far Israel falls short or how unbelieving the nation becomes, God's mercy shall not depart. History shows God has chastened them time after time, and they are still under His thumb.

2 Samuel 7:14

I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
