Why did God discipline the nation of Israel?

God disciplined Israel because of their unbelief and sin. In 2 Samuel 7, He told David that if iniquity came, He would chasten with the rod of men and stripes of the children of men. Israel repeatedly came under His disciplinary action, yet He did not destroy them or remove His mercy forever.

Les explains that in 2 Samuel 7 God speaks to David through Nathan, referring first to Solomon and also to the nation. God says, “if he commit iniquity, I will chasten him, or discipline him, with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men.” Les asks whether God has done this to the nation, and answers that over and over Israel came under the disciplinary action of their God because of their unbelief and because of their sin. Yet verse 15 gives the flip side: God’s mercy will not depart from them as it did from Saul. Regardless of how far Israel falls into wickedness, God will discipline them—they still face the greatest discipline in the tribulation—but He is not destroying the nation of Israel and has not turned His back on them forever.

2 Samuel 7:14
