Whose fault was it that Abram was not totally obedient?
The blame is placed on Abram’s father, not on Abram. When Abram told his father he was leaving, his father insisted on going along, and Abram could not prevent him. Because of that, God halted the journey halfway between Ur and Canaan until his father died.
Les explains that Abram was not totally obedient because he did not immediately leave his father’s house as God had instructed. However, Les does not blame Abram; he places the blame on Abram’s father. When Abram told his father he was leaving, his father insisted on going along. Abram could not stop him, so he went. Les notes that God then stopped Abram halfway between Ur and Canaan until Oterah died, allowing the journey to continue only after the father was gone.
