Who determines who we are spiritually?

God determines who we are spiritually. The triune God, the Creator and sustaining God, is the one who determines who we are and what we are in the realm of the Spirit. Scripture describes believers as God's elect, chosen and designated by Him, not by human prerogative or self-decision.

Les explains that the word elect means chosen: when you elect someone, you designate them to be whatever you intend them to be, and election in the Greek is an act of choosing. He says this is what God has done with every one of them. Les also points to Jesus' earthly ministry statements that He has chosen us and that no man comes to God of his own prerogative. People may think they can decide to go with God anytime they feel like it, but Les says no, because it must be in that chosen aspect; on the other hand, there is the "whosoever will." In this passage, Les emphasizes that it is God who justifies, not our neighbor, boss, husband, or wife—we do not give an account to them. It is the triune God, the Creator God, the sustaining God, who determines who we are and what we are in the realm of the Spirit. If He has chosen, forgiven, and taken us unto Himself, then no one can condemn us, because it is Christ who died and rose again; everything revolves around the finished work of the cross.
