Who bears witness with our spirit?
The Holy Spirit, the Spirit Himself, bears witness with our spirit. Scripture teaches in Romans 8:16 that believers have received the spirit of adoption, whereby they cry, Abba, Father. This witness confirms they are sons of God and heirs of the inheritance in Christ.
Les teaches from Romans chapter 8, verses 14 through 17, that the Holy Spirit Himself, that member of the Godhead, bears witness with our spirit. He explains that as many as are led by the Spirit of God are the sons of God, and that believers have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear, which relates to law and legalism. Anytime someone puts the law on people, it puts them in superstition and fear, scared they are not doing enough. But Paul says we have received the spirit of adoption, placing us in Christ, whereby we cry, Abba, Father, and can call God our Father. The Spirit's witness assures us of this sonship and our inheritance, which originates in Christ.
