What does it mean to believe in your heart?

To believe in your heart means having an inward attitude of the heart, not doing something with hands or feet. It is believing that God raised Jesus from the dead—implying Christ died and was buried—and it brings the promise of salvation when one verbally confesses the Lord Jesus.

Les teaches that believing is not something done with hands or feet; it is an attitude of the heart. He explains that a person must confess with the mouth verbally the Lord Jesus, and believe in the heart that God raised Him from the dead. Since God could not have raised Him unless He died, the death and burial are implied. The promise is salvation: “Thou shalt be saved.” Les emphasizes going beyond the Jesus of His earthly ministry, because He had not yet died then; after the cross and resurrection He becomes Lord, Lord of our life, Jesus Christ the Lord. Les also says we should not merely assume God reads the heart, though He can, but should audibly call on Him for salvation, saying, “Lord, I want you to save me. I believe that what you’ve done, you’ve done on my behalf.”
