What is the Holy Spirit's role in our inheritance?
The indwelling Holy Spirit serves as God's mark of ownership, sealing believers after they believe. He is the Holy Spirit of promise, given as the earnest or down payment of our inheritance, securing what God has promised. This sealing identifies the believer as belonging to God and assures the future inheritance.
Les teaches that after a person believes, God seals and brands them. Using the illustration of a cowman and the brand that marks ownership, Les explains that the indwelling Holy Spirit is God's mark of ownership on the believer. He states that believers are sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, which is the earnest, or the down payment, of our inheritance. So the Spirit's role is to identify the believer as God's possession and to serve as that down payment of the inheritance. This follows salvation and is not based on church membership or baptism.
