When does God make us a full heir with Jesus Christ?
At the moment of salvation, immediately upon believing, God places the believer as a full heir with Jesus Christ. We are born into God's family by the Holy Spirit, and at that same time God performs another act that places us as a joint heir, equal with Christ.
Les explains that just as a son in that culture went through training and adoption rites to be placed as a full partner with the father, so the glory of salvation is that the moment we are saved, we are born into the family of God, and immediately God also places us as the full heir with Jesus Christ. We do not have to work for twenty years like Jacob did for his wives; we do not have to strive and strain hoping to attain this position. It comes the moment we believe, which is why we can say Abba Father. Les says to get these basic doctrinal truths straight: yes, at salvation we are born into the family of God by the work of the Holy Spirit, but there comes another act of God that places us then as a full heir. Reading on to verse 17, if we are children, then we are heirs, and not just an heir down the line hoping for a little inheritance, but we are a joint heir. Even in our culture, a joint heir implies equality: what is His is hers, and vice versa.
