What will happen to believers when Jesus returns?
When Jesus Christ appears, believers will be like Him, for they shall see Him as He is. Although what they shall be is not yet fully revealed, this much is certain: they will be made like Him at His coming.
Les teaches from this passage that believers are now the sons, or children, of God—not hoping to be or thinking they might be. He explains that the eternal future cannot be fully comprehended, but this much is known: when the Lord Jesus Christ shall appear, and He is coming, believers shall be like Him, for they shall see Him as He is. Les also contrasts the world’s expectation that human institutions will solve all problems and bring peace with the truth that there will be no peace on earth until the Prince of Peace comes. Praying for the peace of Jerusalem is therefore praying for the Lord’s coming, because Jerusalem will have no peace until the Prince of Peace is back in Jerusalem.
Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.
