How should I prioritize earthly blessings and heavenly things?

Scripture teaches believers who are risen with Christ to seek those things which are above, where Christ sits at God's right hand, and to set their affection on things above, not on earthly things. God gives earthly blessings to enjoy, but heaven must hold first priority; seeking first the kingdom means other things are added.

Les explains from Colossians chapter 3 verse 1 that being risen with Christ produces a change in appetites and desires, so believers are to seek those things which are above, which are eternal. He points back to the Lord Jesus' earthly ministry: "Seek ye first the kingdom of heaven, and all these other things will be added unto you." Les stresses priorities and says he tried to drill that into young people, even his own: get your priorities straight. That does not mean going into a monastery and becoming nothing but a monk, because God has given earthly blessings to enjoy and believers can enjoy life to the full. But priority speaking, heaven is where our first interest is. So seek those things which are above, where Christ sitteth on the right hand of God, and set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Les notes that society thinks mostly about things, and things perish. He illustrates with wanting a particular make and model of car, finally getting it, and finding it just blah, because anticipation is often more exciting than realization. With eternal things, however, anticipation is great, but the realization will be greater. He then reads Colossians chapter 3 verse 3: "For you are dead..."
