How many times is the Holy Spirit mentioned in Romans 1-7 compared to Romans 8?
The Holy Spirit is mentioned only once in Romans chapters 1 through 7, but in Romans chapter 8 He is mentioned approximately nineteen times. This contrast highlights the shift from the struggle with the old nature to the Spirit’s prominent role in the believer’s life.
Les points out that in the first seven chapters of Romans there is only one reference to the Holy Spirit. He warns his audience of this, noting that the question of how to perform the good that the new nature desires is not answered until chapter eight. There, the Holy Spirit is mentioned about nineteen times in that single chapter. This sets up the transition from the struggle described in Romans 7 to the Spirit-filled life presented in Romans 8.
