Les Feldick Bible Study

When is a person really given free will?

A person is really given free will when they become a believer, having accepted the gospel and its power. Before that, the lost person is bound in the spider web of the devil, the flesh, and the world, and only God's power can break that binding force and set them free.

Les teaches that this freedom is given when a person becomes a genuine child of God by believing the gospel and accepting its power. The lost person does not have as much freedom as he thinks, because he is entwined in the spider web of the devil, the flesh, and the world, and only the power of God can break that binding force. Once God breaks it, the believer is set free, which is what Paul expounds as the freedom of the believer. If there is true freedom, the exercise of the will is left with the believer, and verse 11's "likewise" calls believers to reckon themselves dead indeed to the old Adam.
