When did the old Adam die for a believer?
The old Adam died for the believer the moment he believed. At that instant, God reckoned him dead and crucified, as Paul writes in Galatians 2:20, 'I am crucified with Christ.' Old Adam no longer rules as king; he is kaput, and Christ lives and reigns in his grace.
Les explains that in Romans 6 the believer is addressed as dead to old Adam, so the question is how one who is dead to old Adam can live any longer in sin. He asks when our old Adam died, and answers that the moment we believed God reckoned him dead and crucified. Les cites Galatians 2:20, where Paul says, 'I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me.' This is the whole work of the gospel in the hearts of men: we can put old Adam on the cross, reckon him as dead, no longer ruling as a king. He is kaput. Now Christ lives and reigns in his grace. Les also points out that this truth goes beyond water baptism, which he will address in verse three.
I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.
