Are we guilty because we ate from the forbidden fruit?
No. Scripture indicates we are not guilty sinners because we ate a forbidden fruit; that was Adam's sin, not ours. We did not eat from the forbidden tree or do anything to merit condemnation. Instead, we inherited condemnation as sons of Adam, being born spiritually dead, destitute, and enemies of God.
Les explains that this is a difficult double negative, but clarifies that we are not guilty sinners because we ate of a forbidden fruit. We are not guilty in the similitude of Adam's sin. Adam did that; we did not. We did not eat of the forbidden tree, and we did not do anything to merit condemnation. Instead, we inherited it because we are sons of Adam, born immediately into this world spiritually dead, spiritually destitute, and spiritually an enemy of God. Les says this is hard to explain, but it is God's business, and He does not make mistakes. We accept by faith that God set it in motion: He created Adam innocent, sinless, and perfect, but Adam fell, and God decreed that everyone coming from Adam would be a fallen creature. Yet God did everything to bring that fallen creature back to his original state if they would believe. It has always been by faith. Adam and Eve were restored into fellowship by faith, and so it continued through the Old Testament. Les further notes that we did not go through what Adam did, nor did Christ go through what Adam did, but Christ superseded it. Everything Adam accomplished to bring the human race into condemnation, God through Jesus Christ has reconciled; He paid the debt and made everything possible to bring men back to Himself.
