Why must we have a new body according to 1 Corinthians 15:50?
According to 1 Corinthians 15:50, flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor can corruption inherit incorruption. Because humanity bears the image of the earthy and remains under the curse, the natural must give way to the spiritual. Therefore a new body is required, fashioned after Christ’s resurrected body.
Les explains that verses 48–49 contrast the earthy and the heavenly. We have borne the image of the earthy because we are sons of Adam, flesh and blood, and under the curse. But we shall also bear the image of the heavenly, moving from the natural state to the spiritual state. Then verse 50 declares that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, neither does corruption inherit incorruption. So, Les says, we must have a new body. It will be a whole new body, fashioned after Christ’s body, especially after His resurrection. That is our hope: one day we will have that glorious body that will not be contained by walls or ceilings or space. Les also suggests we may still enjoy pleasures such as eating, since Christ ate on the shores of Galilee. Paul lays this out to establish basic doctrine, especially for Gentiles.
Now this I say, brethren, that flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God; neither doth corruption inherit incorruption.
