How can a person fulfill the Law?
A person fulfills the Law by loving others, not by independent law-keeping. Paul writes that whoever loves another has fulfilled the Law, because love seeks the other person’s highest good. When genuine love operates, one cannot break the commandments, since true love refuses defrauding, stealing, or immoral relations.
Les teaches from Romans 13:8 that love is the only way to fulfill the Law. He defines love as seeking the other person’s highest good, and says that the one who loves another has, past tense, fulfilled the Law. Israel could not fulfill or keep the Law because they were constantly breaking it. But when love is operating, a person cannot break the Law: if you really love someone, you will not talk about them behind their back, steal what is theirs, or enter an immoral relationship. Les stresses to young people that “if you love me” used for instant gratification is not true love; true love seeks the other person’s highest good. Grace does not free believers to do as they please, because the Ten Commandments remain the perfect law of a holy God.
Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
