How did God call Abraham out of the idolatrous city of Ur?
God, in His grace, reached down to Abraham in the idolatrous pagan city of Ur and called him to leave his country, his kindred, and his father's house for a land God would show him. Abraham obeyed that call by faith.
Les explains that the whole world, including Abraham’s family, was steeped in idolatry. Into that idolatrous home and pagan city of Ur, God in His grace reached down to one man, Abraham, just about like He did with Saul on the road to Damascus. God told him to get out of his country, from his kindred, and from his father’s house, and go to a land He would show him. This was to make the break with idolatry. Abraham responded in faith and did it. Les also connects this to Romans 4, showing salvation is simple enough for a child to understand yet profoundly complex as we grow in faith.
