What should be our final authority in faith?
Scripture is our final authority in faith. When we come before God, He will not ask whether we obeyed a denomination or its dogma; He will confront us with His Word alone. The repeated standard is 'What saith the Scripture?'—not what philosophers or other people say. The Book is what counts.
Les teaches that Scripture is our final authority. He points to Abraham, a man of stature in his day, who had nothing to boast about before God and could only be a man of faith—that is the lesson Scripture shows. In Romans 4:3 the question is, 'For what saith the Scripture?' Les stresses that when we come before God someday, He will not ask whether we were obedient to our denomination or obeyed its dogma; He will confront us with the Word, and nothing but. So we must be careful to ask what the Scripture says, not what anyone else or some philosopher says, but what the Book says. Paul uses this over and over. In Galatians 4:30 it is again, 'Nevertheless, what saith the Scripture?' That is what counts—nothing else. That is where we prepare ourselves for when we meet Him one day.
Nevertheless what saith the scripture? Cast out the bondwoman and her son: for the son of the bondwoman shall not be heir with the son of the freewoman.
