How was Abraham saved?
Abraham was saved by faith plus nothing. He did not offer sacrifice, practice circumcision, or possess the law; he simply did what God said. His salvation came without those works, illustrating that believers today also enter into salvation by faith alone.
Les teaches that Paul returns to Abraham in Romans chapter 4, verse 1, because Abraham is the Old Testament example Paul alludes to more than anyone else. In Galatians, Paul says those who are children of faith are also children of Abraham, though this does not make Gentiles into Jews. Les explains that Abraham was saved by faith plus nothing: he did not sacrifice, did not practice circumcision, and did not have the law. He simply did what God told him. Therefore, just as Abraham was saved without law, sacrifice, or circumcision, believers today also enter in by faith alone. Paul uses Abraham repeatedly to make this connection.
What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
