What is limited atonement?
Limited atonement is the view that Christ's atonement was only for those who become believers, limiting its scope. However, the Bible says He died and paid the sin debt for every human being—everyone—though it does not automatically apply to them until they believe.
Les teaches that limited atonement is the idea some hold that Christ's atonement was only for those who become believers. He rejects that, saying his Bible declares Christ died and paid the sin debt for every human being—everyone. Yet that payment does not automatically apply to anyone until they believe. He warns we must be careful here. He then moves to explain propitiation by recalling the Old Testament tabernacle: two rooms, the Holy of Holies with the Ark and mercy seat, the table of showbread, altar of incense, candlestick, laver, brazen altar, and outer fence. On the Day of Atonement, Aaron the high priest brought three animals, killed one, sprinkled blood on the mercy seat first for his own sin, then for Israel's sins, and sent the scapegoat into the wilderness. This illustrates the biblical teaching on atonement and propitiation.
